Excel copy paste not working can stop a normal workday in seconds. You press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, nothing appears, and Excel shows no error at all.
This is not a mistake on your side. A September 2026 Office security update, KB5002914, caused Excel to fail silently when pasting in several versions of the program. Microsoft has since released fixes. This guide shows how to confirm the problem, get the right update for your version, and keep working in the meantime.
If Excel will not paste after the September 2026 update, install the latest Office update for your version. Microsoft released fixes for Excel 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024. Until you update, use Paste Special (Ctrl+Alt+V) or Cut, Undo, Paste (Ctrl+X, Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+V). Always check that the destination cells actually changed.

ToggleWhat is causing Excel copy and paste to fail
Microsoft’s KB5002914 support note confirms that paste operations can fail silently: the source remains selected, the destination remains unchanged, and Excel shows no error. Users also reported problems with AutoFill and moving cells. Pasting data into Excel from another app usually still works.
The silent part is what makes this dangerous. You may think you pasted a column of numbers when nothing changed, and then save or send the file anyway.

Do not trust a paste you did not look at. Until Excel is updated, glance at the destination cells after every paste, especially before you share a workbook or run a report.
Which versions of Excel are affected
Microsoft lists Excel 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024, plus Excel in Office Online Server. Microsoft 365 apps are not listed, and reporting found no reliable cases of the problem there. According to BleepingComputer, the fixes need to be installed manually.
Office 2016: install KB5002665.
Office LTSC 2019: update to build 10417.20208 or later.
Office LTSC 2021: update to build 14334.20918 or later.
Office LTSC 2024: update to build 17932.21000 or later.
Office Online Server: install KB4461632.
These numbers were accurate when we checked them. Microsoft can replace them with newer builds, so always confirm in Microsoft’s own Excel known-issues note before you download anything. Download updates only from Microsoft.
How to test if you are affected
- Open a blank workbook.
- Type any three values in cells A1 to A3.
- Select them and press Ctrl+C.
- Click cell C1 and press Ctrl+V.
- If nothing appears in C1 to C3, your Excel is likely affected.
Next, find your version. Go to File > Account > About Excel. The top line shows the version and build number. You can compare it with the fixed builds in the table above.
Excel copy paste not working: 6 fixes
1. Update Office from inside Excel
- In Excel, choose File > Account.
- Select Update Options > Update Now.
- Let the download finish and restart all Office apps.
- Run the three-cell test again.
This works for most Click-to-Run installs. If the button is missing, your copy is probably a volume or MSI install managed by an IT team or a standalone package.
2. Install the fix manually if you use a standalone or LTSC version
Look up your version in the table above and install the matching update from Microsoft’s Download Center or your IT department. After installing, restart the PC, not only Excel.

3. Use Paste Special while you wait
Microsoft suggests Paste Special as a workaround, mainly for Office 2016 and 2019 workbooks that contain conditional formatting. Go to Home, open the Paste drop-down, and choose Paste Special, or press Ctrl+Alt+V.
Then choose Formulas, Formulas and number formats, Values, Values and number formats, or Paste Link, depending on what you need.
4. Try Cut, Undo, Paste
Some users report that this sequence works: press Ctrl+X, then Ctrl+Z, then Ctrl+V. Right-click paste also works for some people. These are user reports from Office Watch, not official fixes.
5. Open Excel in Safe Mode to rule out add-ins
Hold Ctrl while you open Excel, or press Windows + R, type excel /safe, and press Enter. If pasting works in Safe Mode, an add-in may be involved. If it still fails, the update is the likelier cause.
6. Run an Office repair
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Office, select Modify, and choose Quick Repair. A repair will not replace a missing security fix, but it rules out file damage.
Keep the Windows clipboard history in mind as a cross-check. Press Windows + V to confirm your copied data is really on the clipboard. If it is there but Excel will not paste it, the fault is inside Excel.
What not to do
Do not copy an older excel.exe over the new one. Mixed program files can cause crashes and strip out security fixes.
Be careful about uninstalling the update, too. KB5002914 addresses 29 Excel vulnerabilities, some involving remote code execution, according to Office Watch. Rolling back leaves those open. Update to the fixed build instead whenever you can.
Office 2016 is past end of support. If you still use it, plan a move to a supported version. Our guide to Windows 10 Extended Security Updates explains the same risk on the operating system side.
Protect your data while the bug exists

For critical files, compare totals before and after you paste. A quick SUM on the source and destination columns will catch a silent failure straight away.

When to expect a permanent fix
Microsoft has released fixes for the affected versions. Install the latest update for your edition, restart Excel, and repeat the three-cell test. Microsoft’s Excel known-issues page lists the paste problem as fixed, although Paste Special can still help if a workbook with conditional formatting continues to fail.
If you manage several PCs, update one test machine first and run the three-cell test before rolling out wider. For general software crashes, read our guide to fixing common software errors.
Paste problems that are not this bug
The September update is a common cause right now, but Excel can fail to paste for other reasons. Check these before you decide the update is to blame.
You are still editing a cell
If the cursor is blinking inside a cell, Excel treats Ctrl+V as text paste and may ignore a block of cells. Press Esc, select the target cell once, and paste again.
The sheet or cells are protected
Protected sheets block pasting into locked cells. Look for a padlock message in the status bar, or open the Review tab and check whether Unprotect Sheet is available. Ask the file owner for the password rather than trying to bypass it.
Fill handle and drag-and-drop are turned off
Open File > Options > Advanced and look under Editing options. Make sure Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop is ticked. This setting affects dragging, not Ctrl+V, but it is a quick check when autofill misbehaves.
Merged cells or mismatched shapes
Excel will not paste a range into an area with a different merged-cell layout. Unmerge the target cells or paste into a single top-left cell instead. If an error message appears, the cause is not this silent bug.
Advice for small offices and shared PCs
If several people use Excel, avoid fixing it one desk at a time without a plan.
- Pick one test PC and note its Excel build under File > Account > About Excel.
- Install the fixed build for that version and run the three-cell paste test.
- Roll the update out to other PCs once the test passes.
- Tell staff to use Paste Special until every PC is updated, and to check totals on important sheets.
Keep a short list of who runs Office 2016, 2019, 2021, or 2024. Older packages need a different update than Microsoft 365, and Office 2016 is past end of support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Excel paste nothing and show no error?
The September 2026 security update KB5002914 introduced a bug where the paste operation might fail silently. Microsoft documented this in its known-issues note and has released fixes.
Is Microsoft 365 Excel affected?
Microsoft does not list Microsoft 365 among the affected versions, and reporting found no reliable cases. Check your build number in File > Account to be sure.
Is Paste Special a safe workaround?
Yes. Microsoft itself suggests it, particularly for Office 2016 and 2019 workbooks with conditional formatting. Check the destination cells afterward.
Should I uninstall KB5002914?
Usually not. The update fixes 29 vulnerabilities, so rolling back leaves you exposed. Install the fixed build for your version instead.
Does this problem affect Windows itself?
No. The bug is inside Excel. Pasting in Word, Notepad, and your browser should work normally, which is a quick way to confirm the problem is Excel only.
